Remastering legacy seismic data

Overview

The Challenge

In 2020 Moveout was asked by Summit Exploration to remaster two legacy datasets, so that critical exploration decisions could be taken without incurring the time delay and expense of commissioning new exploration surveys.

What we did

Survey 1:

Data comprising 11,500 tapes were conditioned and remastered before being transcribed to USB hard drives in order to provide an easy-access to a full-fold and fully migrated subset covering 216km2 over the area of interest.

Survey 2:

Summit provided legacy seismic field data; however no associated navigation data could be located. Utilising Moveout’s bespoke MetaseisTM software, our data experts were able to extract the missing navigation data from the pre-processed data. This meant we could reconstruct navigation files that were then merged with the raw seismic data. The resulting nav-merged dataset was reprocessed to further define a prospect which was then planned for drilling.

Survey 1:

The 2-week turnaround on the first survey data enabled the customer to make a rapid decision not to drill the identified hydrocarbon prospect far sooner, and at significantly lower cost, than if it had commissioned a seismic survey.

Survey 2:

Moveout’s unique set of methodologies meant this survey could be reprocessed, despite the original navigation data being entirely missing. The resulting data enabled Summit Exploration to make the decision to drill the refined prospect, saving considerable time and expense in making a major exploration decision.

“There is no doubt that asking Moveout to remaster old surveys was a wise choice – it saved considerable time and expense and provided us with data we could use to make key exploration decisions.”
