Every year, energy companies invest hundreds of millions of dollars acquiring new subsurface data while petabytes of valuable historical information remains trapped on obsolete media and in proprietary formats.
Through the Stratus Alliance, Tape Ark, Moveout Data and Osokey today announced their strategic collaboration to align three complementary areas of expertise, in order to help customers unlock the value of that historical subsurface data at scale.
“Energy companies are now realising the value of AI and are now in a race to gain access to their complete collections of subsurface data” said Guy Holmes, founder and CEO of Tape Ark. “By working together, the Stratus Alliance will take customers from aging physical media to governed, accessible and AI-ready information at a scale that was previously extremely difficult to achieve.”
Holmes says the goal of Stratus is to give energy companies a coordinated pathway from physical archive recovery to long-term, cloud-enabled access, by combining hyperscale media recovery, format decoding and metadata reconstruction with cloud migration, geoscience-grade quality control, data discovery and sustained accessibility. “Customers can draw on the combined expertise of all three organizations through a single coordinated delivery model, while retaining the flexibility to choose the technologies and services that best fit their requirements,” he continues. With facilities and operations across North America, Europe, India and Australia, the three companies will be able to support customer archives wherever they are located.
According to Darren McDonald, CEO of Moveout Data, each company has distinct roles:
“Tape Ark contributes mass-scale tape ingest, legacy media recovery and cloud migration capabilities, including its Nexus data access platform, while Moveout Data contributes forensic geoscience data expertise through its Metaseis platform, including legacy seismic & navigation format decoding, metadata reconstruction, technical validation, forensic quality control and delivery of standards-compliant, structured datasets.
“Finally Osokey provides subsurface data management, trace level metadata, data discovery and access through its technology platform leveraging a proprietary code base, which supports major subsurface data repositories including the UK National Data Repository.”
Together, the Stratus Alliance will provide a global capability that takes customers from physical media to searchable, governed and AI-ready subsurface assets.
“The real challenge is understanding what has been recovered,” says McDonald. “Validating its integrity and transforming it into information that can be trusted and used – that is where Moveout Data and Metaseis are making a difference.”
For customers, the collaboration will reduce vendor coordination, technical risk and time to value, says Joseph Nicholson, COO of Osokey. “Stratus will enable organizations to assess their legacy archives, helping them identify what data they hold, what should be preserved and what has the greatest potential operational, regulatory or commercial value.
“Customers need the confidence that valuable subsurface information can be recovered without creating another inaccessible data silo,” Nicholson continues. “This collaboration connects physical data recovery with the tools required to discover, manage and put that information to work.
